The Governor is to sign acupuncture bill before Thanksgiving making it law. There will be a grace period that allows the law to take effect.
What happens now is that acupuncturists will now be regarded with the same esteem as other licensed health professionals in the state of Michigan; because of this designation we will be able to bill insurance plans that offer acupuncture but previously denied coverage unless it was performed by an MD.
We know there were several Blue Cross plans in Michigan that had this in effect, but with this new law in effect they will not be able to discriminate against licensed acupuncturists. It further promotes safety by making it illegal to needle anyone without sufficient education as held by MDs or NCCAOM board certified acupuncturists.
We thank you for all your calls and emails of support for passage. We hope the coming year leads to more access of care for everyone.
