Chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema affect millions of people worldwide and often extend well beyond the skin itself. Persistent itching, redness, dryness, scaling, and recurring flare ups can interfere with sleep, concentration, work, and everyday comfort. While these conditions may appear similar on the surface, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes that the underlying causes can be very different from one person to another.

Chinese herbal medicine has been used for centuries to support healthy skin by identifying and treating the pattern of imbalance contributing to each individual’s symptoms. Rather than focusing solely on what can be seen on the surface, the treatment considers the body as a whole. Every herbal formula is carefully selected according to the patient’s presentation, making Chinese herbal medicine a highly individualized approach to chronic skin conditions.

My Clinical Experience

Psoriasis and eczema are some of the more interesting conditions that I see because no two patients ever present exactly the same way. Two people may arrive with nearly identical looking rashes, yet the underlying pattern causing those symptoms can be completely different in Chinese Medicine.

Using Chinese Pulse Diagnosis I can hone the herbal formula to be more specific to the patient’s particular presentation. Pounding pulses will require more anti-inflammatory herbs, more weak pulses nourishing herbs for supporting the blood density to regenerate skin, deep pulses and itching require more herbs that alleviate histamine reactions. All done using herbs from our herbal pharmacy customized to each patient.

One of the biggest misconceptions about chronic skin conditions is that the problem exists only at the skin’s surface. This is why topical treatments from the dermatologist only give temporary relief. I have seen real dramatic changes using herbal medicine to treat a variety of skin conditions that improve quality of life not only from symptom reduction but from getting off medications that often inhibit immunity and leave the patient vulnerable to illness.

Understanding Psoriasis and Eczema in TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, healthy skin depends on the smooth movement of Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids throughout the body. These substances nourish the skin, support healthy tissue repair, and help maintain its natural protective function. When this balance is disrupted, the skin often reflects those internal changes through redness, itching, dryness, scaling, or inflammation.

Although psoriasis and eczema have different medical diagnoses, they frequently involve several common patterns of imbalance in Chinese Medicine.

Blood Heat: Blood Heat is one of the most common patterns seen during active flare ups. The skin often appears bright red, inflamed, and intensely itchy. Heat naturally rises toward the surface of the body, making symptoms more noticeable.

In the clinic, patients with prolonged periods of stress, hormonal imbalance, or heat intolerance will present with this pattern. The movement of the blood becomes so chaotic and inflamed it irritates the liver metabolism and follows the body’s attempt to remove heat through the pores leading to redness all over parts of the skin and usually hot to the touch.

Blood Dryness: When the Blood is unable to properly nourish the skin and create healthy new skin cells from below, dryness becomes a dominant feature. The skin may become rough, flaky, cracked, and persistently itchy. Rather than intense inflammation, these patients often struggle with chronic irritation that never seems to completely resolve. They generally have history of blood loss, anemia, pale skin, and/or low appetite.

Damp Heat: Some patients develop red, swollen skin with areas that may ooze or crust over. In Chinese Medicine, this presentation is commonly associated with Damp Heat. Digestive function often becomes an important consideration because the body’s ability to process food and fluids plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin. These patients usually have a history of acne or are prone to digestive complaints with heavy foods.

Blood Stagnation: Longstanding skin conditions can eventually develop Blood Stagnation. Thickened plaques, persistent discoloration, and slow healing are common characteristics. Improving healthy circulation becomes an important part of treatment in these chronic cases. Repeated injuries from accidents, sports, painful periods, or surgery can lead to a slow down of healthy circulation to a region of the body and require a rectification of blood flow to the area.

Qi and Blood Deficiency: When skin conditions have persisted for many years, the body may gradually become depleted. The skin heals more slowly, flare ups become recurrent, and overall resilience decreases because the body lacks sufficient nourishment to maintain healthy tissue. These patients usually have low blood pressure, fatigue, and durations of chronic illness that now manifest on their skin.

Chinese Herbal Medicine For Chronic Skin Conditions

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Chronic Skin Conditions

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the primary treatment methods used for psoriasis and eczema. Rather than relying on a single herb, herbal formulas combine multiple ingredients that work together to address each patient’s specific pattern of imbalance.

Commonly used herbs may include Sheng Di Huang, Bai Xian Pi and Ku Shen, Mu Dan Pi, and Dang Gui. These herbs are rarely prescribed individually. Instead, they are carefully combined into balanced formulas that are customized for each patient and modified throughout treatment as symptoms change.

It is uncommon for two patients with psoriasis or eczema to receive exactly the same prescription because the underlying pattern is rarely identical. This individualized approach has been a defining principle of Chinese herbal medicine for centuries.

Supporting Skin Health Through Diet

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers diet an important part of supporting healthy skin. While there is no universal eating plan for psoriasis or eczema, dietary habits can influence the body’s internal balance and may contribute to recurring flare ups in some individuals.

General recommendations often include eating a variety of fresh vegetables, choosing minimally processed foods whenever possible, drinking adequate water throughout the day, and limiting excessive refined sugars and highly processed foods. Regular meal times may also help support healthy digestion, which is closely connected to skin health in Chinese Medicine.

Many patients also begin noticing personal patterns between certain foods and their symptoms. Keeping a simple food journal can often provide useful information over time.

Lifestyle Factors That Support Healthy Skin

Herbal medicine is only one part of treatment. Daily habits can have a meaningful impact on maintaining healthy skin and reducing the frequency of flare ups.

Stress Management: Stress is one of the most common triggers that patients report. Whether through meditation, breathing exercises, regular exercise, or simply making time for relaxation, managing stress often supports both overall wellbeing and healthier skin.

Sleep: Healthy skin depends on adequate rest. Many of the body’s natural repair processes occur during sleep, making consistent, restorative sleep an important part of long term skin health.

Gentle Skin Care: Using gentle cleansers, avoiding excessively hot showers, and moisturizing regularly may help support the skin’s natural barrier and reduce unnecessary irritation.

Regular Movement: Regular physical activity supports healthy circulation throughout the body. Walking, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, swimming, and other moderate forms of exercise can all contribute to overall health while supporting the body’s natural balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does Chinese Herbal Medicine Take to Work for Psoriasis or Eczema?

Every case is different. Some patients begin noticing improvements in itching, redness, or the frequency of flare ups during the early stages of treatment, while more longstanding skin conditions often require a longer course of care. Because the skin naturally renews itself over time, meaningful improvement is usually gradual rather than immediate.

Are Chinese Herbal Formulas the Same for Everyone?

No. We customize every herbal formula based on the individual’s presentation rather than simply treating the diagnosis. Two patients with psoriasis or eczema may have completely different underlying patterns, which means their herbal prescriptions are often very different as well. And as the treatment progresses, herbal formulas are often adjusted to reflect the patient’s changing presentation.

Can Diet Affect Chronic Skin Conditions?

Yes. We frequently discuss diet as part of treatment because digestion and skin health are closely connected in Traditional Chinese Medicine. While recommendations vary from person to person, identifying dietary habits that may contribute to recurring flare ups is often an important part of long term management.

Is Chinese Herbal Medicine Safe?

When prescribed by a qualified practitioner, Chinese herbal medicine has a long history of safe use. We carefully review each patient’s health history, current medications, and supplements before prescribing an herbal formula to ensure the treatment is appropriate for their individual needs. This individualized approach has been one of the greatest strengths of Chinese herbal medicine for generations.

Conclusion

Psoriasis and eczema are often more than conditions that only affect the skin. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they are viewed as patterns of imbalance that can involve Heat, Dryness, Dampness, circulation, digestion, and the body’s overall ability to nourish healthy skin. Through carefully prescribed Chinese herbal medicine, dietary guidance, and lifestyle modifications, treatment focuses on addressing these underlying patterns while supporting healthier skin over time.

If your skin condition keeps coming back despite your best efforts, we’d be happy to help you better understand what’s contributing to those recurring flare ups and develop a customized herbal treatment plan designed specifically for you.
